Joel’s intricate and delicate designs caught our eye, the manipulation of simplistic shapes into complex symmetrical patterns is a great example of how the simplest of MacDraft tools can be used to great effect. We asked Joel which tools are most useful to his design work and why.
Grouping Features
“MacDraft’s grouping features allow me to make subtle changes in an arc by stretching. By combining different arc sizes, I can generate more complex patterns, spirals, waves, and arabesques. I use waves of various sizes, grouped together to create a single wave with diminishing peaks and troughs, such as this enlarged example from the Powerforms SuperCell Plate.”
Arcs
“The spirals in my designs are formed from numerous arcs which are then flattened with the group function to create an ovoid spiral.”
Line Weights Zoom
Joel’s unique design style uses so many close-knit lines that one of his favorite features is the ‘line weight zoom’. We haven’t seen extensive use of this tool in other featured designs, so it’s a pleasant surprise for it to receive such high praise.
